Plantation Shutters: The good, the bad and the ugly...

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Bedroom Window with Plantation Shutters

The Good:

As a Window Cleaner I have noticed Plantation Shutters are trending quite a bit, and why wouldn't they? They look great, they help keep the Ballarat winters out and deliver privacy plus. But read on, there are some practical measures you can take to look after your investment and prevent unnecessary damage.

The Bad:

I have encountered on a few occasions that Plantation Shutters have been installed over windows with internal flyscreens. In some situations these flyscreens can't be removed without removing part or all of the plantation shutter. This makes cleaning your windows extremely hard and in some cases may not be feasible due to the cost and the risk of damage to your shutters.

If you are thinking about getting some plantation shutters, confirm with your tradesman that you will be able to remove your flyscreens after installation. Removing the shutters for access to your flyscreens by a window cleaner could get costly.

And now, the Ugly...

A pro tip for keeping your windows in top condition through Ballarat's winters:

Make sure to get good air circulation around your Plantation Shutters and dust regularly. When your shutters are kept closed with little circulation, dust and moisture can accumulate in the gap between your window and shutter.

This is a prime breeding ground for mould and mildew which can can cause rot to your plantation shutters, window frames and window sills.

There are also products that use Silica Desiccant like in the link below that will assist in absorbing moisture. These can be placed on your window sill.

Regular window cleaning can assist in keeping the space between your shutters and window mould free. See Ronin's Residential Window Cleaning Services page for how we may assist you in keeping your windows mould and damage free.
